Your Complete Houseboat Trip Guide
New to houseboating? Everything you need to know to prepare for a comfortable and unforgettable trip at Emerald Cove Marina.
Getting Ready for Your Trip
Whether this is your first houseboat adventure or you’re a returning guest, a little preparation goes a long way. Our houseboats are fully equipped for safety and basic operation, but guests are responsible for bringing personal items, food, and comfort essentials.
This guide walks you through every step of your trip — from what to pack and how check-in works, to loading your boat and checking out. We want to make sure you have the best experience possible on Bullards Bar Reservoir.
Check-In Process
When you arrive at Emerald Cove Marina, please check in at the marina office to complete your registration. During check-in, our staff will review your reservation details, collect any remaining balances, and go over important safety information and boat operation guidelines. You will receive a brief orientation after loading is complete covering the houseboat’s controls, navigation basics for Bullards Bar Reservoir, and marina rules. Please allow approximately 30 to 45 minutes for the full check-in and orientation process. Check-in time is 2:00 PM or 4:00 PM, and we ask that all guests arrive on time so that our team can ensure a smooth start to your trip.
Loading Procedures
After checking in at the office, it’s time to load your houseboat — this is done before your orientation. Our team will bring a loading boat to the launch ramp to transport your belongings directly to the back of your houseboat. Simply bring your items to the ramp and our staff will take care of the rest. If a loading boat is not necessary, dock carts are available for you to use. We recommend organizing your gear in clearly labeled bags or bins to make the process as smooth as possible. Once loading is complete, your orientation will begin.
Bedding & Sleeping Arrangements
During the summer months, a light blanket is usually sufficient. Pillows are provided on main beds only; however, some houseboats do not have designated “main beds,” and we recommend bringing your own pillows for comfort regardless.
Important notes by boat type:
• Luxury Houseboats (Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby): Comforters are provided. Guests must bring their own sheets for the main beds.
• 55’ Deluxe Houseboats: No bedding is provided.
• Bedding is not sold in the marina store.
Towels & Clothing
Please bring plenty of towels for your stay, including bath towels, beach towels, and kitchen towels. We also recommend packing extra footwear, sunglasses, hats, and multiple sets of swimwear for comfort throughout your trip.
Toiletries & Personal Items
Septic-safe toilet paper and paper towels are provided onboard. All other personal care items should be brought with you. Recommended personal items include soaps and shampoo, a hair dryer, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and any personal hygiene items or medications you may need.
Water & Utilities
Each houseboat is equipped with potable water designed to last approximately seven days under normal use. A secondary water spigot draws directly from the lake and is intended for rising off sand and showering. Many guests prefer to bring additional bottled drinking water for convenience.
Life Vests & Safety Equipment
Safety life vests are provided for the maximum number of occupants allowed aboard each houseboat.
If you are traveling with small children or larger individuals, you may wish to bring personal life jackets that fit snugly and comfortably. Additional, more comfortable life vests may be available upon request.
Check-Out Process
Check-out time is 9:00 AM or 11:00 Am on your departure day. Please plan to have the houseboat returned to the marina dock by this time. Before returning, make sure all personal belongings are gathered and the boat is left in a reasonably clean condition. Remove all trash and food items from the boat and dispose of them in the designated waste areas at the marina. Upon arrival at the dock, our staff will meet you to assist with tying up the boat and unloading your belongings. A brief walk-through inspection will be conducted to assess the condition of the houseboat. Any damages beyond normal wear and tear will be noted and may be charged against the security deposit. Once the inspection is complete, you are free to load your vehicle and head home. Refunds of security deposits, if applicable, will be processed according to the terms of your rental agreement.
Essential Items Available in the Marina Store
The Emerald Cove Marina General Store carries many convenience items and essentials; however, inventory is not guaranteed, especially during peak season.
The nearest full grocery store is located approximately 25 minutes away in Oregon House, with a smaller convenience store located about 15 minutes away in Camptonville.
Gasoline for boats is available at several locations around the marina.
Items commonly available at the store include snacks, basic groceries, canned goods, frozen meals, beverages, and condiments. You will also find BBQ supplies such as charcoal, lighter fluid, and s’mores sticks, as well as paper goods, plastic utensils, trash bags, and cleaning supplies. A selection of over-the-counter medications, first aid essentials, sunscreen, bug spray, toiletries, and personal care items is also typically in stock. While we try to keep a wide variety on hand, we strongly recommend bringing your own supplies to ensure you have everything you need for your trip.
